š¦ A Thanksgiving Experiment, A Cozy Family Day

This Thanksgiving, I decided to try an experiment ā a heartfelt attempt at recreating my grandmaās famous hamburger dressing. I knew going in that it wouldnāt be an exact match. When Grandma made hers, she mixed the ground beef in raw, and when sheād pull the roaster from the oven, the top would be bubbling with savory fat and crisp browned edges.
I wasnāt quite ready for that level of nostalgia (or grease!), so I browned and drained the meat first. And Iām fairly certain she never touched boxed stuffing mixā¦but I did, because real life.
When I mentioned my plan to my dad, he was surprised. He didnāt think Iād remember her making it. He also had a special request ā he likes adding gravy directly into the mix ā so I figured, why not? If weāre experimenting, letās go all in.
I thought I added the right amount of liquid. I didnāt.
It turns out thereās a big difference between baking dressing in the oven and cooking it in my beloved 7-quart Crock Pot. (And yes ā I absolutely used a slow-cooker liner. I never make anything in my Crock Pot without one anymore. Cleanup is too easy to pass up!) One extra cup of water pushed it into ātoo moistā territory, though the flavor was still solid and everyone insisted it tasted good. Next time Iāll reduce the water, and the recipe I share below will reflect the amount I wish I had used.
So no, this version didnāt magically summon the precise nostalgia of Grandmaās recipe.
Butā¦the cozy part still showed up.
The scent of turkey, the hum of conversation, siblings teasing one another in the next room, a full house holding four generations at once ā thatās the real holiday magic.
Food is memory, yes, but so is warmth. So is togetherness. So is the joy of being squeezed into a too-full living room with people you love.
I sincerely hope that however you spent your day ā with family, with friends, in quiet, in chaos, cooking or reading or simply resting ā it held at least one cozy moment that made your heart exhale.
Happy Thanksgiving, from my familyās full house to your own warm corner of the world. š§”
