Journaling — A Cozy Self-Discovery

Most of us have heard the long list of benefits that come with journaling: reduced stress, a more balanced mood, greater self-awareness, improved memory—the list goes on. But if you’re anything like me, maintaining a consistent, daily journaling habit can feel nearly impossible.
More times than I can count, I’ve opened a notebook only to find a page from months ago where I promised myself, “I’ll write every day.”
And then… I didn’t.
So how can journaling be good for your mental and spiritual wellbeing when you only do it in irregular bursts?
Here’s where grace enters the practice.
Your sporadic journaling habit is not a flaw—it’s a reminder that you’re human, and perfection has never been the requirement. This post is both a permission slip and a soft reminder: even if you “start again” a dozen times… even if you only journaled three pages this entire year… you still did beautifully.
There is value in every single session.
And that feeling of quiet satisfaction when you set your pen down after even ten minutes?
It matters.
You matter.
Trying—even gently, even inconsistently—is enough.
Adding Tarot or Oracle Cards to Your Practice
If you want to deepen your journaling or make it feel more engaging, try incorporating tarot or oracle cards into your sessions.
Journaling already opens your inner world, but when paired with cards, the practice becomes more spacious, more sacred, and far more intuitive.
A simple way to begin:
- Shuffle your deck with the intention that the card you draw will guide you to a topic worth exploring today.
- Study the imagery.
- What emotions rise up?
- What symbols catch your eye first?
- Read the card’s title or keywords.
- What do they mean for you right now?
- Finally, glance through the guidebook.
- Is there a phrase, a sentence, or an idea that sparks something in you?
Then ask:
How is this card trying to guide me today?
And if you get intuitive impressions that don’t match the guidebook at all—wonderful. That means you’re connecting directly to your own wisdom instead of relying solely on someone else’s.
Write it all down.
Follow where your thoughts drift.
Let your intuition lead the way.
A Few Favorite Journals
If you’re searching for a new journal to inspire a fresh start, here are a few of my favorites:
• My “Forever Journal”
A large, hardcover, 365-page leather journal. It feels substantial, grounded, and a little ceremonial. At the pace I journal, it will last five years or more—and I love that about it.
• The Pocket Art Journal
Small enough to slip into my purse, with half the pages lined and half blank. Perfect for random thoughts or sketching image ideas while I’m out in the world.
• The Glow-in-the-Dark Journal
This one is just fun—the cover glows after being exposed to light. The “Starry Sky Blue” design features a full moon, a buck, and luminous reflections. I’m saving it specifically for full-moon reflections.
A Cozy Closing Thought
Journal as much or as little as you want.
Don’t judge yourself for days when you don’t show up.
Celebrate the moments when you do.
If all you write this year is one heartfelt page, then that one page is something to be proud of.
And I’m proud of you for it.
