Self-Care Isn’t Optional: Reframing What It Means to Meet Your Own Needs

We talk about self-care like it’s optional — something you squeeze in when there’s extra time, extra energy, or a spare bit of money. But the truth is, caring for ourselves isn’t extra at all. It’s essential.

When I think about it, the word self-care almost makes it sound like a hobby — nice if you can fit it in, but not really necessary. And yet, when we strip away the buzzword, what’s left is the most basic truth: tending to our own well-being is a need, not a luxury.

A Small Shift in Perspective

For years, I treated self-care like something I had to earn. I’d tell myself, “Once I finish this project” or “Once I get everything else done,” then maybe I’d rest or do something nice for myself. But of course, that moment rarely came.

At some point, I realized I didn’t need permission to care for myself. What I needed was awareness — a gentle recognition that my version of self-care might look quiet, small, even ordinary. And that was more than enough.

When I stopped seeing self-care as indulgence and started seeing it as maintenance — like breathing, sleeping, or drinking water — everything softened.

My Kind of Care

For one of my friends, manicures are a must. She feels put-together and confident when her nails are done, and that sense of “finished” helps her feel ready to face the day.

For me? I almost never paint my nails. But I’ve learned that having really good-smelling liquid soap in my bathroom is one of my quiet necessities. Usually, it’s a strong apple or berry scent — something I pick up from Bath & Body Works that makes me feel grounded and cared for.

It might sound silly, but every time I wash my hands and catch that scent, it feels like a tiny act of kindness — one I’ve chosen to give myself. It’s not about the soap itself; it’s about the message behind it:

“You deserve to feel good in your own space, in your own small ways.”

That’s what real self-care feels like to me — not an event, but a moment.

The Personal Alchemy of Care

The longer I pay attention, the more I notice that everyone’s “care” looks different.
For one person, it’s a morning walk or a tidy desk.
For another, it’s music, color, candles, or soft clothes.

There’s no hierarchy of self-care — only awareness of what genuinely nourishes you.

Your needs won’t look like mine, and they shouldn’t. Self-care is personal alchemy — part habit, part heart.

A Gentle Reminder

We all have basic needs — to feel safe, rested, inspired, and connected. But we also have unique needs, shaped by our personalities, preferences, and rhythms. Discovering those is one of the most loving things we can do for ourselves.

If you want to explore that for yourself, try asking:

  • What’s one small thing that makes me feel taken care of — not pampered, but supported?
  • How can I bring more of that into my everyday life?

You might be surprised how something simple — a scent, a song, a walk, or even the texture of a favorite blanket — can change your whole inner environment. And because the Universe reflects to us in the outside world, what we carry inside, we need every feeling of peace, calm and grounding we can gain. If we can make our inner world more of an oasis, we carry that energy out into the world with us and the world needs every one of us to do that as much as we can.

Closing the Circle

When we honor the needs that make us feel whole — no matter how small — we practice the most genuine kind of magic: the kind that reminds us we’re worth caring for.
