A Little Heart Block: A Free Mosaic Overlay Crochet Pattern
Sometimes the best way to learn a new crochet technique is to start small.
A friend of mine wanted to learn mosaic overlay crochet, but she wasn’t quite ready to jump into the full afghan pattern I’d designed for her. So I created a little heart block that would give her a chance to practice the technique on a much smaller project.
The result is a 7.25-inch heart block, and I’m sharing the pattern as a free download!
A Small Project for Practicing Mosaic Overlay Crochet
Mosaic overlay crochet can look complicated at first, especially when you’re looking at a large, detailed blanket design. But you don’t have to start with a big project to learn how it works.
This little heart block gives you an opportunity to get familiar with the stitches, practice following the pattern, and see how the design develops one row at a time.
The pattern includes a chart as well as right-handed and left-handed written instructions, so you can work from whichever format you prefer.
From Heart Blocks to a Little Pillow
Of course, once I’d made a heart block, I couldn’t resist playing with it a little more!
I crocheted two blocks, whip stitched them together, and turned them into a small pillow. I love how the raised stitches give the heart texture and make it stand out against the background.
You can use the block as a practice piece, make a little pillow like mine, or experiment with other ways to incorporate it into your crochet projects.

If you’re new to mosaic overlay crochet, I hope this little project gives you a comfortable place to start. And if you’re already familiar with the technique, it’s a fun way to make something small between larger projects.
Happy crocheting!
